Choosing an Instrument For Your Child

There are many things that you need to consider when looking for an instrument for your child to learn. In this blog we will discuss only a few of those factors.

Age

One of the major factors that needs to be accounted for when choosing an instrument for your child is their age. Younger children do not have the coordination that it takes to play most instruments, so starting them off on something like a drum set might be a good idea. Drum sets range in size, making them a good option for any sized child, and help the student to learn coordination and rhythm, skills that they can then transfer to other instruments, like the violin or piano. Violins and pianos are both good starting instruments, as they work well for children with smaller hands and teach the students skills that they can transfer onto an array of other instruments.

Size and strength

Size is another factor that you need to consider when choosing the right instrument for yourself or your child. If your child is small you can hardly expect them to carry a large instrument, like a tuba, around. Starting your child on smaller instrument, or one that provides ease of movement, will allow them to grow their skills which they can then transfer.

Your Child’s preference

This is the most important factor that needs to be considered when choosing an instrument for your child. If you child has no say in the instrument that they learn they are less likely to continue learning it, practice, or take joy from the experience. By allowing you child to have a say in the instrument that they learn they are more likely to be dedicated to actually learning.

These are just a few of the things that you need to consider when choosing an instrument for your child. We recommend doing research, letting your child try out instruments in store, and letting your child listen to the music of the instrument before you make your decision.
